The Eastern Cape Provincial Government teamed up with the Nelson Mandela Museum to host Mandela Day celebrations in Ludeke Village, Bizana, Alfred District Municipality. The event featured a range of activities and services for the community.
One of the key highlights was the renovation of the historic Ludeke Methodist Church, where Nelson Mandela and Winnie Madikizela got married in June 1958. There are plans to designate the church as a heritage site.
The celebrations also included the donation of essential items to the Early Childhood Development Centre in the village, such as mattresses, blankets, playmats, tables, and toys. In addition, medical personnel provided healthcare support to elderly residents by offering screenings and medical tests.
The day’s theme, “Preserving and Maintaining the Footprints of Nelson Mandela,” emphasized the commitment to community service and heritage preservation, in line with Mandela’s legacy of compassion and service to humanity.
