Spotify has launched a direct messaging feature for users 16 and older to share music and content privately, enhancing user recommendations while ensuring security and moderation.
Spotify is introducing a direct messaging (DM) feature in its mobile app that allows users to share music and content with friends and family. This feature will be available in selected markets for both Free and Premium users aged 16 and older. Announced on August 26, the tool aims to help users easily recommend songs, podcasts, and audiobooks without leaving the app.
Spotify mentioned that users expressed the need for a dedicated space to share their favorite content and track recommendations. With the new feature, users can tap the share icon in the Now Playing view to send content to people they have previously interacted with on Spotify, such as contacts from Family or Duo plans and those they’ve collaborated with on playlists. Recipients can choose to accept or reject message requests, and users can opt out of receiving DMs through the settings menu.
Messages can include text and emojis, but Spotify clarified that this feature is not meant to replace existing social media platforms. Users can still share content through Instagram, WhatsApp, and TikTok. The messages will be encrypted during transfer and storage but will not be fully end-to-end encrypted. Spotify will use detection technology for unlawful content and moderators will review reports from users.
This launch is part of Spotify’s effort to expand its offerings beyond music, which includes podcasts and audiobooks. The company has been experiencing growth, reporting 276 million paying subscribers as of the second quarter of 2025, a significant increase compared to the previous year.
