Empty plates were scattered on the sands of Copacabana beach, Brazil, on Saturday, organized by NGO Rio da Paz to highlight hunger to the leaders of the world’s richest nations. The group brought 733 empty plates to represent the 733 million people who suffered from hunger in 2023, according to the United Nations. This figure equals one in eleven people globally and one in five in Africa.
The G20 countries, which Rio de Janeiro is hosting this year’s summit, will launch a global alliance against hunger and poverty on the first day of the summit, following Brazil’s initiative last July. Brazil’s current presidency of the group has made reducing poverty one of its priorities, with practical activities planned for 2025-2030 to accelerate the elimination of hunger and poverty. The main events of the G20 summit are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, focusing on these important issues. Additionally, November 17th is recognized as the 8th World Day of the Poor.
