South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa is concerned about the safety of illegal miners stuck in an abandoned mine in the North West province.
The police have restricted food and water to try and force the miners out for arrest. Ramaphosa emphasized that human rights must be respected during law enforcement. He called the Stilfontein mine a crime scene and urged for a secure area with the safe return of miners.
The President vowed to work with the mining industry to combat illegal mining that causes economic losses. Despite some miners being brought to the surface by volunteers, many are still underground, with uncertainty about their ability or willingness to leave.
