Former EFF chairperson Dali Mpofu revealed in an interview with the SABC that he, along with former president Jacob Zuma, had orchestrated the formation of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) in 2023. They kept the plan confidential while still being members of the EFF and ANC, respectively. Mpofu indicated that discussions about this new political party had been ongoing for about 12 months before its official launch in December.
While Mpofu clarified that he was not a double agent, he mentioned attempts to recruit leaders from various opposition parties to join forces with the MKP. This included meetings with leaders from the EFF, PAC, UDM, ATM, ARETA, the APC, and Azapo. Mpofu also stated that he had not informed EFF president Julius Malema of his departure from the party, expressing that it was not personal but a decision made for the benefit of his people.
The EFF has experienced a series of resignations and internal challenges over the past few months, including calls for leadership changes, expulsions, and uncertainty ahead of the party’s National People’s Assembly in December. In response to Mpofu’s departure, former deputy president Floyd Shivambu welcomed him to the MKP, praising the new party’s leadership and commitment.
