South Africa has closed the Lebombo border crossing with Mozambique due to violent protests following the disputed presidential election won by Frelimo. Vehicles have been torched on the Mozambican side, leading to the temporary closure of the port for public safety. South African police fired rubber bullets at Mozambicans trying to enter the country, while violence spread to Ressano Garcia near Lebombo.
The South African side remains unaffected, but safety measures are being implemented. Some buildings have been set on fire, and seven Mozambican officials sought refuge in South Africa. BMA officials, police, and the army are working to prevent the protests from spreading. The protests began in Maputo after Frelimo candidate Daniel Chapo was declared the winner, with opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane going into hiding due to safety concerns. At least 18 people have been killed in clashes with the police, leading to internet and social media restrictions. Despite the prime minister’s call to return to work, a general strike initiated by Mondlane continues. Defence Minister Cristóvão Chume threatened to deploy the army ahead of planned nationwide protests to contest the election results and change the established power.
