As we mark Youth Month in South Africa, Ms Phozisa Manakaza, a young professional in the Sustainability Business Unit at Coega Development Corporation (Coega), writes that it is important to emphasize the critical role that young people play in driving innovation and sustainable development in South Africa. Just Energy Transition (JET) area. Nationally, this shift builds on South Africa’s commitment to contributing to global climate change mitigation targets and is framed by South Africa’s Cabinet-approved JET Framework and Investment Plan, driven by the President’s Committee on Climate Change.
JET represents a multifaceted economic transformation that requires flexible thinking, technological advancement and youth empowerment. By engaging young professionals in decision-making processes and promoting skills development initiatives, we can unlock their potential and shape a sustainable future.
The success of JET depends on technological innovation and the advancement of initiatives. To ensure the sustainability of this transformation, a focus must be placed on the empowerment, upskilling and capacity building of South Africa’s youth. Young professionals bring a new perspective to decision-making and strategic planning, exploring alternative technologies that promise to create a green tomorrow. Involving young people in the energy transition equals creating a sustainable legacy for future generations.
Traditionally, young people have often been excluded from decision-making arenas in the energy sector, despite their active participation in communities and efforts to advance the 2030 Agenda. The Just Energy Transition Skills Development Program acts as a conduit to bridge the skills gap and provides opportunities to introduce “green” jobs in the energy sector. The program does more than just raise awareness; it empowers young people to make a significant impact and drive change. Embracing diverse voices and perspectives is critical to decolonizing knowledge and promoting inclusivity.
Women play a key role in JET as visionaries and nurturers. Moving from a traditional leadership paradigm to a more inclusive and innovative style is critical to the successful implementation of JET. Women propose leadership approaches that prioritize capacity building, talent identification, empowerment and support – all of which are integral to achieving transformation goals.
The JET Skills Development Program builds think tanks that bring together experts from diverse political, economic and technological backgrounds to promote collaboration, creativity and knowledge sharing. These platforms serve as incubators for new ideas, solutions and strategies that can accelerate the transition to a sustainable energy landscape. Finally, as we celebrate the energy, creativity and potential of young people during Youth Month, let us highlight the critical role young people play in driving a just energy transition. Empowering youth, promoting inclusivity and promoting innovation are fundamental pillars that will guide our societies towards a more sustainable and equitable future. By investing in the abilities and aspirations of young people, we are investing in a brighter tomorrow for all.
