To mark Youth Month, East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) participated in the 2024 Provincial Youth Month Celebrations in the Eastern Cape on Youth Day, 16 June 2024. The event was held at Moko Grounds, eziHlahleni Village, Debe Raymond Mhlaba Ward 1, and was hosted by the Office of the Prime Minister (OTP). The celebration aims to highlight and create opportunities for young people. The event also provides a platform for various government departments and entities to showcase their initiatives, programs and projects for youth. Additionally, the event included the handover of material support to various beneficiaries, demonstrating a commitment to providing youth with tangible resources and opportunities.
As part of its commitment to youth development, ELIDZ donated sports equipment worth R120 000 to three local sports clubs: Cosmos Sports Club, Evergreen Rugby Club and Hotspot Boxing Academy. This significant donation aims to empower local youth by increasing their access to sports and recreation, thereby promoting healthy lifestyles and community engagement.
Youth located in areas facing significant socioeconomic challenges and barriers often experience hardship, including high unemployment and poverty rates. As a result, they are often vulnerable to or victimized by criminal behavior and substance abuse. These difficulties and disadvantages highlight the need for initiatives that emphasize the significant impact of sports and recreation opportunities. Furthermore, these highlight the importance of providing necessary resources, raising awareness and promoting active participation to break cycles of social disadvantage.
This meaningful contribution reflects ELIDZ’s unwavering commitment to supporting initiatives that strive to make a positive impact and promote community development in the Eastern Cape. ELIDZ’s qualities and values are closely linked to corporate social responsibility and corporate citizenship, aiming to continuously create change by investing in the potential of young people and shaping their future. By empowering the next generation of leaders, pioneers and change-makers, ELIDZ is committed to making a positive and sustainable impact in our communities.
Speaking to the beneficiaries, ELIDZ Interim Chief Executive Officer Thembela Zweni reiterated that ELIDZ is committed to nurturing the talents and aspirations of young people through initiatives that address socio-economic challenges and provide necessary resources and opportunities. “This commitment is expected to help them overcome barriers and realize their full potential through youth development-related initiatives,” he said.
